Vaporization

A vaporizer is a device used to release the active ingredients contained in certain plants in the form of steam.
It is a device generally used in phytotherapy and aromatherapy because it allows to consume them in a less harmful way.
Vaporization consists in heating plant extracts below the combustion temperature of the active ingredients contained in these plants.
Heating facilitates the evaporation of the substances contained in the plant extracts, keeping below the combustion temperature avoids the degradation of these substances.

Types of vaporizers:

  1. Thermal Conduction Heating: The least expensive vaporizers use this process. The herbal extracts are in direct contact with the heat source, which tends to alter the taste to a greater or lesser extent. The temperatures are not stable which can result in burning the plants. The simplest of them use a simple lighter as a heat source. These can easily be made at home, for less than 5 frs.
  2. Radiant heating: A halogen bulb is used for heating. The temperature rises as the plant extracts absorb the light energy.
  3. Convection heating without blower: These vaporizers use a food tube (silicone, rubber, plastic...), through which the user inhales the vapor.
  4. Convection heaters with blower: These vaporizers pass hot air through the plant material using an air pump or fan. These vaporizers come with heat resistant food bags. The vaporizer fills the bag with steam. The user unties the bag and inhales the cooled vapor. Water and ice can be used instead of the bag to cool the steam.
  5. There are other things to consider in a vaporizer:
  • The materials that make up the heating element (ceramic, quartz...)
  • The materials that make up the body of the vaporizer
  • The precision of the thermostat of the vaporizer (adjustable and more or less precise heating temperature).

A medical study has shown that the vapor produced by the Volcano vaporizer is composed of 95% THC.

Other medical studies are available for example the study of Arno Hazekamp.

The harmful effects of cannabis smoke are the major obstacle to the possibility of using cannabis in a medical setting. The conclusions of these studies are that vaporization is a reliable process to deliver cannabis to the patient without the harmful effects of smoke and its many combustion by-products.

We often hear that vaporizing cannabis produces a less "heavy", less physically "brittle" effect than smoking. This may be due to the fact that when you vaporize, you do not inhale carbon dioxide and other substances that can decrease the blood flow to your heart and brain. As a result, the latter do not have their oxygen supply reduced, which could explain the absence of a certain "heaviness" caused by smoke inhalation.
